The Reverend Mary McCarthy. Mary was ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of New York in September 2021. Mary graduated from Union Theological Seminary with a Masters in Church History in 2015 and from General Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree in 2019. Mary grew up in the Presbyterian Church and was received into the Episcopal Church right here at St. Luke’s Somers, in 2011. Before receiving a call to the priesthood, Mary was a singer and educator, working as the choral director at Irvington High School, and Music History teacher at The Spence School in New York City. Prior to coming to St. Luke’s, Mary worked as the Director of Christian Formation at Christ’s Church in Rye for 7 years and then served Christ’s Church as Curate after her ordination to the priesthood.
Returning to St. Luke’s truly feels like ‘coming home.’ Mary is passionate about preaching, Christian Formation for adults as well as children, and pastoral care. She loves to explore ways in which to best match the gifts of parishioners with the work of bringing the light of Christ into the Somers community and out into the world.
She loves that St. Luke’s has such a visible commitment to community service and outreach through the ministries of its Thrift Store and Food Pantry. She is excited to walk this journey as the parish continues to explore what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world.
Mary loves hiking, gardening, reading, and cooking. She is married to Christopher York and they live in Carmel with their dog, Athena and cat, Gracie.
